Briar Woods

The sound of thunder and a high-pitched screaming woke me. My eyes flew open as the sun splashed my face. I sat up, momentarily confused. Wilder was curled into a ball, screeching, with huge blisters bubbling on his skin.

“Fuck!” Shouting, I jumped on top of him, covering him with most of my body. I used the leaves that had gotten knocked to the ground to cover the rest of him and his screams turned to whimpers.

I tucked my hand under his shirt and over his pounding heart. “Shhh, baby. It was a herd of deer. They’re gone now and I’m gonna stay here till the sun sets. I swear to ya, Wilder, you’re gonna be okay now.”

He let out a long, shuddery breath and I murmured Robert Frost poems for another two hours until the sun had gone fully behind the chemical clouds. I rolled off Wilder and carefully uncovered him. His skin was covered in third-degree burns and he was utterly motionless.

“Wilder?” I whispered, brushing his hair from his face. “Ya alive, Vamp?”

His eyes, streaked with red, popped open. He sprung up and tackled me to the ground, sinking his fangs into my neck painfully, and screaming, I clawed at him. He continued to drink, and I put my hand on his forehead to give him a useless push.

“Wilder,” I croaked. “Wilder. Stop…” Suddenly, the pain was replaced with a feeling of giddy peace. My hand slid limply to my side as beautiful colors swirled in front of my eyes. I moaned as heat built and rubbed myself on Wilder.

“Oh, fuck, Emily.” He patted my face. I smiled at him as my head lolled to the side. “Shit. Emily. I’m so sorry.”

“‘Tis okay… more?” I bent my neck.

“No. No more. Come on, love, it’s going to be okay. The venom will fade, and one time won’t make you addicted.”

I giggled. “Ya attacked me.”

“I know. I lost control. I swear I didn’t mean to hurt you. Or drug you.” When my head rolled again. He held me to his chest. “I’m so sorry, Emily. Please be okay. God, I am a monster.”

My mind was nothing but swirly colors and peace, my body---dead weight, but I still felt him pick us both up from the ground. The colors changed as we walked, and he kept murmuring words I didn’t understand. Nor could I respond. Slowly, the colors faded back into the regular and I shook my head.

“Wilder?”

He paused mid-step and his eyes filled with relief. “Thank God you’re okay.”

“Put me down, Vamp.”

Something flashed over his face as he gently set me back on my feet. “I’m extremely sorry I lost control.”

I wrapped my arms around my waist. “Please don’t touch me again.”

He inclined his head and tucked his hand in his pockets. We walked the rest of the night in a terse silence. We reached the mountains that stretched as far as the eye could see in both directions. It would take us at least a week longer to go around the behemoth.
